The Menendez Brothers Have Been Reunited in the Same California Prison

Erik and Lyle Menendez are serving life sentences for killing their parents in 1989.

“On February 22, 50-year-old Joseph Lyle Menendez was transferred from Mule Creek State Prison in Ione, California to the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, says Terry Thornton, deputy press secretary at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.A February 14 message attributed to Lyle and posted on the brothers’ unverified Facebook page stated that after being separated for almost 22 years, the brothers would be reunited at Erik’s San Diego prison.

Thornton said that the brothers had asked to serve their sentences at the same facility previously, and it was determined at a classification hearing for Lyle earlier this month that “there was no reason that they could not be housed at the same institution.”

Thornton said it “remains to be seen,” however, whether the brothers will be permitted to see each other. “They’re in the same prison but they’re in different facilities, and any decision to house them in the same facility or same unit or same cell has not been made yet,” she said.”

Washoe was a common chimpanzee and the first ever non-human to learn how to communicate with sign language. She was raised as close to a human child as possible. One of her care workers, Kat, suffered a miscarriage and took a few weeks off work. When she returned, Washoe seemed upset that she had left her for a prolonged period of time. Kat signed that she was sorry and signed “my baby died,” to which Washoe responded by signing the word “cry” before running her finger down Kat’s cheek, mimicking a tear. She then asked Kat for a hug. Washoe, who had lost her own babies, appeared to be sympathetic and understanding toward Kat’s own pain and loss.
